Explore the fundamentals of contemporary dance through the ideas of release, opposition, imagery, initiation, embracing gravity, and finding liberation though moving the body in space. This series of classes will deepen your level of body awareness, and understanding of how your body can move safe and harmoniously. Classes will included guided explorations and a series of progressive movement phrases over the span of the 6 weeks.

Course Content:
Alignment: Learn the proper body alignment and posture required for contemporary dance.
Stretching: Engage in stretching exercises to improve flexibility and prepare the body for contemporary dance movements.
Strengthening: Build strength in the muscles used in contemporary dance through targeted exercises.
Balance: Develop balance and stability through specific contemporary dance exercises.
Floor work: Practice contemporary dance movements and exercises on the floor to improve technique and body awareness.
Center work: Progress to the center of the studio to practice contemporary dance movements without the support of the floor or barre.
Movement: Explore different contemporary dance movements and combinations to develop coordination and musicality.
Basic terminology: Familiarize yourself with the essential contemporary dance terminology used in class.

About Yiming
Yiming Cai is a danced artist from Singapore. Cai grew up competing in Wushu and started dancing while completing his bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies at the Nanyang Technological University. Cai went on to dance in The Human Expression Second Company and moved to Canada in 2016 to study at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre. He has also since worked on projects with Tiger Princess Dance projects, The Platform, JDdance, Danny Grossman Dance Company, Little Pear Garden Dance Company, Sharon B. Moore, Sashar Zarif and Jane–Alison Mckinney. Cai has also participated in intensives such as One Body One Career, Gaga, Alias Dance Projects and Springboard Danse Montreal; where he performed in the creation of MA.ZE (Hungary) and the repertory of Goteborgdoperans Danskompani under the direction of Stephan Laks. Cai is currently based in Toronto and enjoys a quiet lifestyle outside of dance.
