In-Studio | Absolute Beginner Pointe Series with Eric Hall

This 16-week course is designed for dancers who want to start their pointe journey. We will guide you through the basic concepts and mechanics, understanding the anatomy, and building confidence. By the end of the course, you may feel prepared to start the next level, beginner pointe. However, some dancers choose to repeat the course to solidify their knowledge and build strength. A consistent ballet practice is essential for this course.

Duration: 16 weeks
Level: Absolute beginner

Course Content:

  • Anatomy of the Feet: Learn the structure and function of the feet.

  • Foot Mobility and Strengthening: Targeted exercises for flexibility and strength.

  • Supporting Leg Muscles: Strengthening exercises for leg stability.

  • Pointe Shoe Anatomy: Understand the design and types (traditional vs. plastic).

  • Sewing and Tying Pointe Shoes: Essential skills for proper fit and support.

  • Proper Alignment: Positioning your feet correctly inside pointe shoes.

  • Going on Pointe: Techniques for starting on pointe at the barre.

  • Single-Leg Rises Preparation: Exercises to build strength for single-leg rises.

  • Center Work Preparation: Building confidence, strength and technique for unsupported movements.

This course lays a solid foundation for absolute beginners, guiding you step-by-step through the essentials of pointe work and ballet.

Optional: There will be a pointe shoe fitting opportunity with the wonderful Sarahi Cardenas, The Fifth Dance’s studio director, for an additional $20+hst.

About Eric

Eric Hall has danced professionally with performance companies across Canada, including Ballet Victoria, Ballet Kelowna, and Suddenly Dance Theatre in British Columbia, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal in Quebec, and Canada’s Ballet Jorgen as well as Opera Atelier here in Toronto. His favourite character that he’s performed (also his alter ego) is Dr. Frankenstein! Imparting knowledge he has gained from his professional experience as well as from his training at institutions such as the Quinte Ballet School of Canada, George Brown Dance and the School of Alberta Ballet, Eric creates movement inspired by a large variety of instructors including Mrs. Nancy Kilgour, Mr. Murray Kilgour, Mr. Owen Montague, Mr. Chi Chun, Ms. Svea Eklof, Ms. Kathleen Rea, and Ms. Christine Wright. Since beginning teaching, Eric has had the pleasure of teaching at various schools such as InStudio, Metro Movement, Extension Method, Sean Boutilier Academy of Dance, Ballet Victoria Conservatory, Victoria Academy of Ballet, and now excitingly at The Fifth! Eric incorporates his knowledge from his Massage Therapy studies, approaching ballet from an anatomical perspective, yet is known for creating very dancey, movement-oriented classes.
