Beginner Contemporary Floorwork Series I with Alexander Herrera

This 8-week course is designed for dancers looking to build confidence in floorwork practice within a supportive and safe environment. Through action-and-reaction games and improvisation, dancers will develop spatial awareness, strengthen the connection between body and mind, and build the strength and mobility needed to move confidently on the floor.

Classes will also include foundational movement phrases, technical skills, improvisation, and choreography. This series prioritizes play, safety, and curiosity, offering a space to explore movement without pressure or judgment. Over eight weeks, dancers will build physical strength, coordination, and confidence while cultivating a deeper connection to their bodies and creative instincts.

Course Details:

  • Duration: 8 weeks

  • Level: Beginner

  • Some experience in any form of dance, yoga, Pilates, or general fitness is recommended.

Course Content:

  • Strength & Mobility: Build foundational strength and mobility through accessible exercises and games

  • Floorwork Safety: Develop safe and efficient movement across different planes

  • Floorwork Skills: Explore rolling techniques, transitions to and from the floor, and introductory hand balancing

  • Improvisation: Engage with guided prompts to build creativity, confidence, and new movement possibilities while incorporating floorwork skills

  • Musicality: Learn basic musical concepts and explore different ways of relating to rhythm, texture, and sound

Please note that teachers of all series classes are encouraged to run their class as a progressive course, regardless of the amount of students dropping-in. Meaning that the priority is to the students who have registered for the entire series.

About Alex

Alexander Herrera (Choreographer, Producer) was born in Chiapas, Mexico where he began his dance training in contemporary dance. He earned an exchange opportunity at the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance in Mexico City where he worked with choreographers such as Erika Mendez and Rosana Filomarino. In Canada, Alexander has performed with Newton Moraes Dance Company, Ali McDonald, The Parahumans, Little Pear Garden and with Sarah Di Iorio. He teaches contemporary acrobatic floorwork workshops and most recently presented his choreographic work ‘Visibles’ at the Vanguardia Dance Festival. Alexander is the founder of MxM, a project promoting Canadian-Mexican cultural exchanges and the education of emerging artists.
