About Debbie

I am passionate about the functional mobility of the body and this passion comes from having spent a lifetime in the performing arts as a professional dancer, a choreographer and a dance teacher. Yoga continues my lifelong study of the human body and spirit, combining the exploration of a physical challenge and supportive breathwork with the needed mental conditioning.

My dance career began at the age of 12 as an apprentice with the Cincinnati Ballet Company, and within a few years, became a soloist and one of the company’s rehearsal assistants. Moving from the ballet world, I worked for The American Dance Machine (a Broadway archival company) touring the USA and Japan as the company’s dance captain. In 1980 I moved to Canada to become the rehearsal director/dancer of Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, touring Canada, the USA, Europe, South America and Africa. I went on to work with Howard Richard & Dancers (Montreal), the Judith Marcuse Repertory Dance Company (Vancouver), the Randy Glynn Dance Project (Toronto), Ballet Jörgen (Toronto), as well as many independent choreographers across Canada.

As a choreographer, I created a repertoire of critically acclaimed productions including Aphrodite Unveiled, Raphael is whispering, and Homo Office Sapiensis, which in 2002 received a Dora Mavor Moore nomination for Outstanding New Choreography. Through international collaborative works like Planetarium (with Macedonia) and Diary of an Exile (with Trinidad and Tobago) I introduced exceptional foreign artists in dance, music, and art to Toronto while representing Toronto and Canada on the world stage. In October 2005, I was honoured to be invited to present Planetarium at the United Nations' Assembly Hall in Geneva, Switzerland, as one of the events celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the United Nations.

Since 2009, I have returned to two of my passions; mentoring female dance artists who have been developing their own unique choreographic voices (including Lua Shayenne, Roshanak Jaberi, Victoria Mata Soledad, Esie Mensah and Natasha Powell) and exploring ways to make alignment based techniques more accessible to a wider range of physical bodies.
